The siege of Asola – 1516
‘The Siege of Asola’ is a reproduction in original size, donated by the Pro Loco to the Museum, of a painting attributed to Tintoretto.
The work was painted between 1544 and 1545, exhibited in the Poznań National Museum in Poland and owned by the Barbara Piasecka Johnson Foundation until 2014, when the heiress died. The canvas was sold at a Christie’s auction that very year.
The painting, linked to Asola’s history, was commissioned in Venice by the noble Contarini family around the middle of the 16th century as a source of pride for the family in their defence of the city.
The siege of 1516 is depicted in two different scenes: one with the battle and the fortress in the backgound and the other with the handing over the banner to the Provveditore Francesco Contarini by four notables from Asola as a sign of gratitude for the victory.
